Macau, often referred to as the gambling capital of the world, has reported a significant surge in casino revenues as tourists return post-pandemic. Despite the growth in physical casino activities, online gambling remains strictly prohibited in the region.

The Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) stated that revenues in 2024 have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, driven by high-spending tourists from mainland China. However, the ban on online gambling persists as authorities express concerns over its potential to encourage addiction and money laundering.

Some industry experts believe that a regulated online gambling market could complement Macau’s casinos, especially in attracting younger, tech-savvy players. However, policymakers remain cautious, focusing instead on strengthening anti-money laundering protocols in land-based casinos.
